As predicted, Wilson’s executives worked their magic. The gala extraordinaire was scheduled for February 12. Exhaling a collective sigh of relief, the team addressed their most pressing need. To remain alive, they had to vanish for a week.

“There’s only one option,” quipped the oil baron. “We head to desolate West Texas and disappear. A friend owns an untraceable hunting cabin in a remote and isolated area. There’s nothing but rolling hills, sparse vegetation, and pronghorn antelope. My buddy can make the arrangements. Mackenzie, the FBI must be excluded. That includes the Director. It’s too risky.”

“That’s not a problem.”

“Okay, we separately exit the hospital, rendezvous, and drive to the cabin. Like Robby, we simply vanish. There’s no communication for a week unless my executive secretary sends an urgent message.”

Agreeing to the simple plan, Morgan relaxed. Dubious, the Dubliner fired a final question. “What happens when our sabbatical ends?”

“Robby and I will join the Austin contingent and fly to D.C. One of my men will drop you at a friend’s ranch. You’ll be safe until after the gala.”
